  • 2 lbs pork shoulder or pork butt, trimmed

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Marinade:

  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • ½ teaspoon red food coloring optional, for authentic color

For Basting & Garnish:

  • ¼ cup reserved marinade
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds optional
  • Sliced green onions for garnish

Instructions
 

Step 1: Prepare the Marinade

  • Whisk hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, and oyster sauce in a bowl.
  • Add rice vinegar, five-spice powder, garlic, ginger, and food coloring (if using).

Step 2: Marinate the Pork

  • Place pork in the crockpot and season with salt and pepper.
  • Pour marinade over the pork and coat evenly.

Step 3: Slow Cook to Perfection

  • Cook on LOW for 6 hours, flipping once halfway through.
  • Remove ¼ cup of the marinade before serving.

Step 4: Caramelize & Serve

  • Baste the pork with reserved marinade and broil for 5 minutes (optional).
  • Slice, garnish with sesame seeds and green onions, and serve.
